Hotel Sustainability Application Case Studies
From Initiatives to Implementation
When Solar Energy Fails to Deliver the Expected Reduction in Grid Electricity

The 40-room hotel has two restaurants, a gym, swimming pool, a 200-capacity banquet hall and two meeting rooms. With average room occupancy of 65%, the property consumes approximately 1,300 kWh of grid electricity daily. It has installed rooftop solar panels generating around 100 kWh per day
During the annual review, the owner finds that grid electricity consumption has not reduced as expected after the solar installation, despite broadly unchanged occupancy and banquet utilisation. The hotel needs to understand how effectively solar generation is offsetting grid electricity and why the anticipated reduction has not materialised
Identifying the gaps
A clear baseline and defined objectives: Is the hotel tracking its total electricity consumption before and after installation? Are there defined targets for energy efficiency, renewable energy generation or reducing dependence on grid electricity?
Understanding actual performance: How much electricity does the solar system generate? How much is used on-site, and how much electricity is drawn from the grid? Is the system performing as expected, and are changes in demand being understood?
Managing energy demand beyond solar: Are air-conditioning, hot water, lighting, kitchen equipment, laundry and other major energy uses being reviewed? Are responsibilities assigned for monitoring consumption and acting on identified opportunities?
Applying the Provork framework
Define
Establish an electricity-consumption baseline, understand the hotel's energy profile and set practical objectives for energy efficiency and renewable energy. Identify suitable indicators, such as total electricity use, solar generation and energy consumption per occupied room-night.
Implement
Assign responsibility for energy monitoring, establish a regular data-recording process, review solar-system maintenance and introduce relevant energy-efficiency actions across hotel operations.
Measure
Track grid electricity imports, solar generation and on-site use where data is available. Review total energy consumption alongside occupancy and operational activity to understand performance more accurately.
Improve
Review performance against targets, investigate unexpected changes and prioritise further efficiency measures. Update actions and targets based on the findings.
A clearer picture of the hotel's overall energy performance.
Better understanding of the contribution made by solar generation.
Identification of opportunities to reduce avoidable energy consumption.
More informed decisions on maintenance, investment and future energy initiatives.
Credible evidence of progress against defined objectives.
Taking the next step
Turn renewable energy initiatives into measurable energy performance.
Provork helps hotels connect existing initiatives to a practical sustainability management framework, with clear objectives, responsibilities, indicators and regular reviews.
