Hotel Sustainability Application Case Studies

From Initiatives to Implementation

Water-Saving Fixtures Installed, but Are They Delivering Results?

A 100-room hotel in a metro city has two restaurants, a swimming pool, a gym and banquet facilities for up to 400 had installed water-saving aerators and flow controllers on selected taps.

The GM wanted to understand whether these measures were reducing water consumption and where further savings are possible. Without a baseline and regular monitoring of water use across guest rooms, restaurants, leisure facilities and other operations, it was not possible to establish the impact of existing measures or identify further opportunities.

Identifying the gaps

Understanding the hotel's water footprint: Does the hotel know how much water it consumes? Is there a baseline against which to assess progress? Are the main uses - guest bathrooms, kitchens, laundry, housekeeping, landscaping and swimming pools - understood?

Measuring the effectiveness of initiatives: Has the hotel assessed whether the installed devices reduce water flow under normal operating conditions? Is total water consumption monitored to establish whether the initiatives are contributing to the intended outcome?

Managing water use across operations: Are staff aware of water-saving practices? Are leaks identified promptly? Are laundry practices, kitchen operations, cleaning procedures and other significant uses reviewed for further opportunities to conserve water?

Applying the Provork framework

Define

Establish a water-consumption baseline and identify significant water uses. Set practical reduction objectives and choose indicators such as total water consumption and water use per occupied room-night.

Implement

Assign responsibilities for monitoring water use, checking for leaks and maintaining water-saving devices. Introduce appropriate operating practices and identify relevant conservation measures across departments.

Measure

Review water consumption using meter readings, bills or sub-metering where available. Assess the effectiveness of selected measures through comparable flow-rate checks or other appropriate methods, while accounting for changes in occupancy and hotel activity.

Improve

Compare results against targets, investigate unexpected increases and prioritise further conservation opportunities. Refine operating practices and review progress regularly.

What better management enables

  • A clearer understanding of where and how water is consumed.

  • Evidence of whether water-saving measures are effective.

  • Early identification of leaks, inefficiencies and avoidable consumption.

  • Better-informed decisions on water conservation investments.

  • Measurable progress towards reducing the hotel's water footprint

Taking the next step

Move from water-saving measures to a managed approach to water conservation.

Provork helps hotels integrate water conservation into their wider sustainability management approach, linking initiatives to objectives, monitoring and continuous improvement.
